Four hurt when plane crashes into cars on South Texas street

Four people were injured and taken to hospitals Wednesday after a small plane landed on a South Texas street and crashed into three cars, authorities said.

Three people had non-life-threatening injuries after the crash that happened about 3 p.m. in Victoria, but a fourth was taken to another facility for a higher level of care, police said.

The pilot was being evaluated, police said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

The small plane landed on Mockingbird Lane and a feeder road to Zac Lentz Parkway, also known as State Highway Loop 463 in Victoria, a South Texas city about 85 miles north of Corpus Christi.

β€œWe are glad that it wasn’t worse than what it is. This is not something we see every day,” Victoria Police Deputy Chief Eline Moya told reporters. β€œBut we are glad that people seem to be OK, and they are getting checked out.”

The plane that crashed was a twin-engine Piper PA-31, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Only the pilot was on board, it said.

Images from the scene showed the plane broken in half near a highway overpass.

Video shared on social media showed the twin-engine plane flying very low before landing on a street. Planes in trouble sometimes land on streets and highways.

The FAA said it is investigating the incident.
