Widespread closures in Newfoundland as mighty nor’easter slams province
Blizzard conditions quickly took over parts of Newfoundland during the overnight hours on Sunday as a powerful, rapidly intensifying nor’easter made its way northward.
Blizzard and winter storm warnings remained in effect into Monday morning across the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas, with snow totals forecast to exceed 30 cm—and exceed 30 cm they have, as St. John’s reached 40 cm of snow early Monday morning.
Folks woke up Monday morning to a thick blanket of snow on the ground and alerts of multiple road, business, and school closures. Schools across the Avalon have closed Monday due to the hefty snow, and many flights out of the St. John’s airport have been either delayed or cancelled.

Wind gusts also reached ferocious levels, with wind gusts reaching up to 98 km/h in St. John’s. Blowing snow led to low-visibility and hazardous roadways, prompting the city to close some roads until conditions improve and they can be cleared.
