Chiefs look to become Christmas staple with new NFL request

Christmas Day playing time is at the top of the Chiefs’ holiday wishlist.

Kansas City wants to be a staple in the NFL’s Dec. 25 slate moving forward and has requested such to the league, The Athletic reported Wednesday, with the Chiefs “expected to be one of the teams to play” on the holiday later this year.

It would mark the third straight year the Chiefs have suited up on Christmas.

The reigning AFC champions defeated the Steelers on the road in Pittsburgh last December — one year after losing to the Raiders at home in front of Taylor Swift, the superstar girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

A Chiefs-Christmas union would be similar to the Thanksgiving lineup that has featured the Cowboys and Lions for decades.

Kansas City is looking to rebound in 2025 after a lopsided Super Bowl loss to the Eagles, who thwarted the Chiefs’ attempt at a historic three-peat in February with a 40-22 win.

Although the schedule for this season has not yet dropped, the buzz is building that the Chiefs may open the season on Sept. 5 in Brazil, where the AFC West-rival Chargers are the home team.

“On playing international games, we’re willing to do it whenever the opportunity presents itself,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said. “We make the league aware every year that we would be delighted to play (an international game), whether as a home team or as an away team. We hope, at some point, we’ll get picked back up.”

The Chiefs ventured to Germany in November 2023, defeating the Dolphins en route to a second straight championship.

The Eagles opened their Super Bowl-winning season in Brazil last September when they topped the Packers.
