Yeshiva University, Lehman College baseball end long losing streaks

Two Division III college baseball programs picked up wins that were long overdue.

Lehman College and Yeshiva University came into Tuesday with 42- and 99-game losing streaks, respectively, before the schools split a doubleheader on Tuesday that ended both of their skids.

Lehman defeated Yeshiva 7-6 in extra innings in the opener, pushing Yeshiva’s streak to 100 games, but the Maccabees followed up the loss with a 9-5 win in the second game.

Plenty of attention had been drawn to the game due to the unusual nature of the losing streaks by both teams, and one Yeshiva alumnus, comic Eitan Levine, called the matchup “statistically, the worst baseball game of all time.”

The game between two of the worst college baseball programs in the area took place on the baseball field at Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck, N.J., where Lehman College — located in The Bronx — plays its home games.

It marked the first time Lehman had won since May 9, 2023, when the program defeated Baruch College, 7-4.

Yeshiva’s last win came on Feb. 27, 2022, when it defeated John Jay in a doubleheader sweep.

“I felt a tremendous relief after, when everything ended,’’ Lehman pitcher Justin Chamorro told USA Today Sports. “It’s what we needed for our morale.’’

He had also called the win “crucially important.”

Since both teams have struggled so much over the years, it was easy for each side to sympathize with one another.

Lehman coach Chris Delgado said he understood how Yashiva has felt during the streak.

“We understand what they’re going through. We understand what they’ve been through the past couple of years,” he said.

Yeshiva’s Jake Arnow expressed plenty of relief that his team finally got into the win column.

“It was a big weight off our chest, I’ll tell you that much,’’ Arnow said. “The losing streak has been going on for, what, two years already? So, amazing feeling. That’s all I can say.”
