Parker Posey kept her ‘White Lotus’ accent while shopping in Thailand
Buying the bit.
Parker Posey’s connection to the Southern accent she adopted for her role in “The White Lotus” Season 3 ran so deep that she found herself slipping into character even after filming wrapped in Thailand.
The “Best in Show” star, 56, was overheard using her Durham, North Carolina, drawl while shopping at the Bangkok boutique of Thai silk fashion house Jim Thompson, a brand she wore on the show as Southern matriarch Victoria Ratliff.
“While she was trying on our clothes at our shop, I didn’t realize she was being ‘Victoria’ when she was wearing our silk turban headpiece with our pleated off-shoulder dress, clutching a bag with gold heels, coming out of the dressing room,” Be Inthavong, Creative Director of Jim Thompson, exclusively told The Post of Posey.
“I said, ‘Wow, the whole thing works — are you busy?’ And then she replied back, ‘I’m busy!’ in the North Carolina accent she’s [become] known for in the show,” Inthavong remembered.
“Not knowing her actual character in the series back then, I didn’t realize I was experiencing an iconic moment,” he added. “It comes to show that clothes can put you into another moment and world.”
Founded by an American intelligence officer-turned-silk merchant who vanished without a trace in 1967, the brand’s luxurious silk clothes were chosen for Posey’s character by costume designer Alex Bovaird.
The star stunned in a series of Jim Thompson creations she tried on during her visit, including a blue silk twill “Rustic Flower” v-neck maxi dress (~$565 US), pink “Silk Goddess” midi dress (~$314 US) and metallic gold ikat silk fisherman pants (~$415 US), which she paired with a white oversized boxy silk shirt (~$135 US).
Posey loved the clothes so much that she purchased all of the pieces along with “quite the selection of Jim Thompson pieces,” a spokesperson for the company told The Post.
“She’s now a big fan and supporter of the brand!” they added.
Frank Cancelloni, Jim Thompson’s CEO, also told The Post, “When it came to Parker Posey’s character, we knew very little—only that she had a strong connection to the brand during her fittings [for the show].”
Posey’s “personal purchases” were “an incredibly flattering surprise,” Cancelloni added.
“When the series aired, it was a delightful moment to see Parker’s character bring our pieces to life on screen. It was a beautiful and organic alignment of character, costume, and brand.”
Posey’s Southern accent has been a hot topic of conversation since Season 3 debuted. Her appearance on the “Today” show promoting the show went viral after she recreated Victoria Ratliff’s speech patterns for host Craig Melvin.
“It starts with the dialogue. There’s such funny words like, I love ‘tsunami!’” Posey said in her exaggerated North Carolina accent, adding, “Piper, no!” and “Buddhism!”
“I love Southern women characters. So being able to be this dramatic and funny is just so juicy and fun to do. And, of course, Mike White wrote it so [well],” the star explained.
Despite some criticism, the actress has said that native North Carolinians have praised her dialect work.
“I was in Paris, I was at the Valentino fashion show … And there were these people from North Carolina at the hotel,” Posey told Seth Meyers on his late-night talk show last month.
“And they were like, ‘Uhm, we just have to say, we’re from North Carolina, we think you’re doing a great job. We love the accent, it’s dead on. You’ve got that part down, this is my mother, that’s my aunt,’” Posey recalled.
“We captured something,” she added. “So, that just feels so good!”
