Cops: Woman performed dentistry, minus a license in Bay Shore home

A Huntington Station woman who allegedly set up a “fully functioning dental office” in a Bay Shore home was arrested Thursday and charged with unauthorized practice of a profession, the Suffolk County Police Department said.

Yolany Y. Mejia Carranza, 55, was taken into custody after Suffolk detectives and the Town of Islip Fire Marshal and Building Inspector executed a search warrant Thursday at the home on Heckscher Avenue, according to a police department press release.

Additionally, the release said, “detectives believe Mejia Carranza was previously operating an illegal dental business” on Broadway in Huntington Station.

Police charged Mejia Carranza with three counts of unauthorized practice of a profession. She was being held overnight at Suffolk’s Fourth Police Precinct in Smithtown and is set for arraignment Friday at First District Court in Central Islip, the release said.

Information about whether Mejia Carranza had a defense attorney was not available early Friday.

Last year, a Hempstead woman allegedly practiced dentistry without a license in the kitchen of her apartment, Newsday previously reported.
