CMU president responds to demonstrations against Jared Taylor

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Following Thursday’s demonstrations in response to the speaking engagement of Jared Taylor, Colorado Mesa University President John Marshall weighed in, telling WesternSlopeNow that even though he disagrees with Taylor’s views, the university has to allow for free expression.

“I find his views reprehensible. I deeply disagree with his view of the world. So, in that respect, I think a lot of people on campus felt like ‘This is not a conversation that we are excited about.’ The challenge is, as a public university, we have to allow free expression. We have to allow that in order to protect the rights and the views most especially of the minority. It’s one of those prices you pay for freedom and liberty, is allowing everybody to speak and that sometimes means really ugly ideas.”

Hundreds of people, including students and members of the public, demonstrated on the CMU campus during Taylor’s speech, expressing their views against Taylor’s and calling on the university to not allow controversial speakers on campus.
