Donald Trump Asked Son Barron ‘How’d You Do That?’ When He Turned on a Laptop: ‘Unbelievable Aptitude in Technology’

Barron Trump is studying business, interested in politics and has an “unbelievable aptitude in technology,” according to President Donald Trump, who shared that he was impressed to learn his Gen Z son knew how to fire up a laptop.

The president sat down with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham for a wide-ranging interview on everything from his sleep habits to his negotiations with China. And of course, they touched on Donald’s youngest son, Barron, who turned 19 on Thursday, March 20, when the interview aired.

“If you look at my kids, all of my kids, they’ve been very good, they’ve been very smart,” Donald marveled, noting that they have each attended prestigious schools and worked hard. “They love our country and they’re proud of their father.”

When asked which natural talent of Barron’s stands out to Donald, the president praised his son’s technological know-how.

“I turn off his laptop, I said, ‘Oh good,’ and I go back five minutes later, he’s got his laptop. I said, ‘How’d you do that?’ ” he recalled. “‘None of your business, Dad.’ “

“He’s got an unbelievable aptitude in technology,” the president added.

After graduating from Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach, Fla., last spring, Barron enrolled at New York University, where he studies at the Stern School of Business.

The only child of the president and his third wife, Melania Trump, Barron was largely hidden from the spotlight before graduating high school in May 2024. Though he remains less visible than his older half-siblings, those in the Trump family’s orbit have had more opportunities to get to know the first son amid his father’s political comeback.

“Barron is focused on his studies and doesn’t seem terribly out of place,” a source recently told PEOPLE of the college student’s presence on campus. “He seems to have a button-down collar mentality when he’s in the public eye.”

While the first son broke tradition by not attending the University of Pennsylvania or Georgetown like his father or other members of his famous family, it’s possible he felt most comfortable in New York City, having spent much of his early life at Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan.

“Once he goes out in the world and makes his own mark people will have a better idea of who he really is,” a Miami political source noted ahead of his 19th birthday. “Now his parents have a big influence on him.”

Part of that influence comes from his mother and maternal grandparents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, who helped raise Barron with their own European values. A social source told PEOPLE that Barron is “an old soul who is smart, well-spoken and well-read.”

“He has lived through experiences others his age haven’t,” the source continued. “He is well-grounded, he has seen a lot and he knows who he is.”

Another political source added that while it’s possible Barron would eventually be interested in following his father into politics, at the moment, he is “anxious to form his own companies and make money.”

“He shares that enthusiasm with his father, which comes as no surprise,” that source says. “Barron, in my opinion, knows what he wants.”
