El Paso police searching for suspect in fatal Lower Valley hit-and-run crash

El Paso police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a 64-year-old woman.

The fatal crash happened about 10 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, in the 7300 block of North Loop Drive in the Lower Valley, El Paso Police Department officials said.

Officers arrived at the crash and found a 64-year-old woman who was thrown from her 2000 Toyota Corolla during the collision, officials said. The name of the woman has not been released as police are working to identify her, officials said.

An investigation revealed the woman was driving east on North Loop Drive when she started to make a u-turn. A 2006 Chevy Traverse was traveling in the westbound lanes and struck the Corolla, officials said.

The Chevy driver continued driving west on North Loop, but the vehicle broke down near Hawkins Boulevard. The driver ran away, officials said.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where she later died from injuries suffered in the crash.

The El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations unit is investigating the fatal hit-and-run crash.

Police believe speeding by the driver of the Chevy and failure to yield to traffic by the woman may have been contributing factors in the fatal crash, officials said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the El Paso Police Department at 915-832-4400 or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 915-566-8477.

This is the 64th traffic-related death of 2024 compared to 75 at the same time last year.
