Emmanuel Macron’s attempt to connect with youths on TikTok spectacularly backfires

French President Emmanuel Macron’s attempt to connect with young constituents on social media turned into une grosse erreur after he unknowingly helped a user who previously trolled both him and his wife — and his already dismal approval ratings tanked even further.

Macron, 46, took to TikTok last week to respond to complaints from a content creator going by “s4iintt,” who was upset over fines he incurred for trying to pay for a highway toll with his phone.

In a video viewed over 5 million times, s4iintt claimed he was left with points on his license because he violated French law forbidding phone usage in toll plazas — and Macron decided to weigh in on the debate.

President Macron appeared to unknowingly engage on TikTok with a detractor.

“I think that by 2025, you should be able to pay tolls using your phone,” Macron said in a video posted to his official TikTok account.

“I’ve passed the file on to the interior minister and we’re going to sort it out collectively. Thank you for the alert,” he thanked the detractor.

Macron sent the complaint to the Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau who said he would address it.

But it quickly came to light that s4iintt is not Macron’s biggest fan — with TikTok users easily unearthing videos where he’d called the president a “dwarf married to his French teacher,” who presided over a “country the size of a potato crisp.” France is roughly the size of the state of Texas.

The insults hinged on the fact that Macron’s wife — Brigitte Trogneux — is 25 years older than him and was his high school teacher when they met when he was just 15.

Across France, many were unimpressed by what they saw as an insincere — and poorly thought out — attempt by Macron to connect with the youth.

“By offering a presidential platform to the first imbecile who comes along, Macron undermines the credibility of France,” one French radio host said, according to the Daily Mail.

And the president — who was already facing the lowest approval of his administration — saw his popularity plummet even further.

Over the weekend, a poll found that Macron’s approval rating was just 21% — the second lowest for a French president in modern history, the Telegraph reported.

Aides have reported Macron is “sad” over his dismal ratings, especially in the face of his recent successes on the international stage from the Paris Olympics and the re-opening of Notre Dame Cathedral.
