Firearms arrest after 36-hour stand-off at flats

A man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences following a stand-off with armed police in Sheffield.

Officers were called to the Gateway apartment block on Broad Street just after 19:00 GMT on Monday.

Residents were evacuated to a nearby sports centre and the city saw widespread travel disruption.

A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray, criminal damage, possession of a firearm, threats to kill and communicate with a bomb hoax, South Yorkshire Police said.

The apartment building remains closed while officers conduct a “thorough search”, although surrounding roads including Sheffield Parkway have reopened.

Police said: “We would like to thank those who have been affected for their continued support while emergency services conduct their work.”

The force is working with residents to make sure pets inside the building are cared for and reunited with owners.
