Former Duke University football player charged in killing of woman in Charlotte

A former Duke University football player was charged with murder late Thursday in the killing of Whitney Elizabeth Hurd, who was found stabbed to death in July in a south Charlotte townhome.

Brandon David Braxton, 33, of Charlotte, was arrested on charges of first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon, Mecklenburg County jail records show. He was in the Mecklenburg County jail without bond on Saturday.

Braxton is accused of stabbing the 32-year-old Hurd to death in her home on Werburgh Street, then taking her BMW and iPhone, according to Mecklenburg County court records.

The body of Whitney Elizabeth Hurd was discovered at a home in the 5500 block of Werburgh Street on July 14, CMPD says.

Braxton was a two-time Academic All-ACC selection at Duke, where he played from 2010 to 2013. He was a wide receiver who also played safety in 2012, according to the Duke football roster.

He played the 2008-09 seasons at Providence High in Charlotte. Braxton was ranked the 94th-top wide receiver in the country and the 16th-best overall prospect in North Carolina by Scout.com. He lettered the 2007 season at St. Ignatius High in Cleveland, Ohio.

His father, David Braxton, lettered from 1986 to 1988 as a defensive end at Wake Forest and was a second-round draft pick in 1989 by the Minnesota Vikings. Over six seasons, he played for the Vikings, Phoenix (Arizona) Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals.

Brandon Braxton has several other charges pending in court, The Charlotte Observer reported, including two from 2024.

He was charged with assaulting a woman on Oct. 27 after he attempted to grab the top of her shorts, an arrest warrant said. He was also charged with indecent exposure after he exposed his nude body to a person that same day at the corner of Sixth and Church streets, an affidavit said.
