Long Island HS roundup: Early-season spring sports
Gianna Zawol connected with Megan Kearney for a 45-yard touchdown with 45 seconds left as Kings Park flag football marched to a 24-19 win over West Babylon in its Suffolk II opener on Saturday. Zawol added 17 rushes for 95 yards and two TDs, plus an interception. Sophia Reyes ran nine times for 58 yards and a score.
Talia Acevedo threw two TD passes and Samantha Serrano ran for a 30-yard score to give West Babylon a second-half lead.
Patchogue-Medford 13, Floyd 12: Ella Melo caught five passes for 31 yards and a score before recording a late interception, allowing Patchogue-Medford to run out the clock in Suffolk I. Mackenzie Hughes completed 17 of 33 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns. Angelina McGrath had four receptions for 86 yards and a TD, and two interceptions.
BASEBALL
Carey 4, Floral Park 0: Jack Degnan hit a solo home run and recorded a four-strikeout save for Carey in non-league play. That came after Tristan Hickis earned the win by throwing four hitless innings with seven strikeouts. Jayden Gignante went 2-for-3 with a home run, double, two runs and two RBIs, plus a steal.
SOFTBALL
Long Beach 12, Wheatley 11: Brianna Bothell went 3-for-3, leading Long Beach by scoring a run along with her two RBIs in Nassau V. Myla Sanchez hit a two-run homer. Bella Gray and Avery Graziosi had two hits each.
BOYS LACROSSE
Riverhead 10, Hauppauge 8: Jaxon Binkis scored four goals and assisted another for Riverhead in non-league. Riverhead trailed 4-3 at halftime. Logan Dempsey and Connor Downs scored two goals apiece. Nick Kump led Hauppauge with five goals.
