Giants bring in quarterback Jameis Winston to discuss possible deal

The Giants’ carousel of a quarterback search continued by hosting Jameis Winston Tuesday.

As the third quarterback who’s visited in just under a week, Winston, 31, is the youngest and an intriguing option. He can be brilliant throwing the ball but also too inclined to throw it to the other team.

Still, it signals one thing about the Giants’ plans. There’s little doubt they have to draft a quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick if Miami quarterback Cam Ward or Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders are available.

Two mock drafts that dropped Tuesday hammered that point home. NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah and ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. both had the Giants taking Sanders.

Kiper said if the team signed Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers, it’d be a perfect fit for Sanders to come into.

“Signing one of those veterans — two guys who have won Super Bowls — then double-dipping at the position with Sanders would only help the rookie learn and develop,” Kiper wrote. “There would be no pressure to start Sanders right away or be the guy in Week 1.”

That’s also true if the Giants signed Winston or Joe Flacco. If they did draft Sanders, having Winston or Wilson could be important in other ways.

The Giants have never started a Black quarterback in a season opener and have only played two — Geno Smith and Tyrod Taylor — in franchise history. Signing Wilson or Winston could add another layer for Sanders’ mentorship as players who understand the challenging road Black quarterbacks have historically faced.

Either way, hosting Winston reminds how much the Giants need to both win now and also later by drafting a younger, long-term option to build with.

“When I looked at the Giants and you look at head coach and general manager, there’s some pressure there,” Jeremiah said on a conference call last month. “You need to get this thing going, especially after the team in your division just won the Super Bowl.”

Giants, LB Victor Dimukeje agree

The Giants added more depth on defense and special teams by agreeing to terms with outside linebacker Victor Dimukeje, a league source confirmed to Newsday.

Dimukeje spent his first four seasons with the Cardinals after they drafted him as a sixth-round pick in 2021. He played 55 career games, with eight starts, and was mostly featured on special teams after playing his rookie season at defensive end.
