On the afternoon of Feb. 27, 7-year-old Azaleia Young-Kawaʻa hung out with her mom and three of her siblings in the garage after school.

“She walked out of the gate and she told me, ‘Mom, I’m going to go ride my bike.’ So she jumped on her bike and she waved at me with a big smile,” said the girl’s mom, Sanoe Young. “Maybe about 10 minutes later, I heard what sounded like a car hit another car. I ran out of the gate to find Azaleia on the ground.”

Azaleia was transported to the hospital in critical condition where she remains intubated at Kapiolani Medical Center. Police said the 7-year-old turned into the path of an oncoming car and the juvenile driver remained at the scene.

Hawaii’s e-bike dilemma: Safety, laws, confusion

“He rendered aid. I know he didn’t mean to do it to Honey Buns,” Young said. “I can only imagine what they’re going through today. Maybe not the same thing I’m going through, but some kind of hurt, some kind of pain.”

Honolulu police said others have not been as lucky as Azaleia, even though she is fighting for her life.

Fourteen people have been killed on Oʻahu roads in 2025 compared to just six deaths at the same time in 2024. Azaleia’s family is still holding onto hope that she will recover and stressed the importance of helmets for every bike rider and attentiveness for every driver.

“I trust in the Lord that He’s going to make a way that Azaleia is going to walk out of those doors. She’s going to walk out of those doors and she’s going to come home with us,” she said.
