‘Heartbroken’ community mourns family killed in Hudson River crash

Students in Barcelona wept uncontrollably after learning the devastating news Friday that their classmates were killed aboard the doomed helicopter that crashed into the Hudson River.

“There are no words that can express what we feel at this moment,” the Jesuits of Sant Ignasi school said in a statement posted on social media Friday.

The school offered its condolences and support to the families and friends of the victims, Agustin Escobar, his wife, Mercè Camprubí Montal, and their three kids, Augustin, 10, Mercedes, 8, and Victor, 4.

The family was killed when their sightseeing chopper fell apart midair and plunged into New York City’s Hudson River on Thursday. The pilot, Navy veteran Sean Johnson, 36, also died.

The family was visiting the Big Apple from Spain to celebrate Mercedes’ birthday, extending a work trip Escobar, a Siemens executive, was taking.

Students at Sant Ignasi sobbed and embraced their parents after hearing he tragic news Friday, right before they were about to head out for spring break.

The school held a moment of silence for the family, student Oleguer Bertran, 18, told the Associated Press.

“In due course, we will share information about the events to honor and remember our beloved family,” Sant Ignasi said in its announcement.

“We are deeply grateful for the condolences and expressions of affection received, and we thank you for joining us in prayer.”

Comments offering condolences flooded the school’s social media posts.

“Dear God, I have no words to express my feelings, an entire family with small children, this is a tragedy,” one person wrote. “Many thanks to the school for their accompaniment to the families, the workers and above all the students. Very tough way to start Easter.”

It is unclear if all three kids attended the school, which is located in the upscale neighborhood of Sarrià and serves kids from nursery through high school and vocational training.
