Highly contagious virus continues to spread across New York City

NEW YORK (PIX11) — A highly contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea has rapidly spread across New York City, with cases nearly doubling from November to December.

While symptoms of norovirus can last one to three days, those infected can continue to spread the virus for up to two weeks, according to the CDC.

There have been 2,350 reported cases of the norovirus illness from October to December, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In November, there were 640 cases; however, this number nearly doubled in December, with 1,264 cases reported.

Data from the Health Department shows that there were only 1,016 reported cases in the same three-month span in 2023.

Prevention

While there aren’t specific medicines to treat the norovirus illness, the Health Department has provided the following advice to prevent infection:

• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds after using the restroom or changing diapers, before eating, or before preparing food.

• Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces such as countertops, doorknobs, and light switches, and common areas like bathrooms.

• Stay home if you or your child is experiencing symptoms and avoid contact with others until at least 48 hours after symptoms resolve.
