SOUTH BEND — The St. Joseph Valley Parkway is closed from Indiana 2 eastbound to Mayflower Road because of multiple crashes caused by the snow and slick road conditions, St. Joseph County Police said in a Facebook post just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14.
After responding to multiple crashes in the morning, South Bend and St. Joseph County police had earlier urged motorists not to use the highway, locally known as the U.S. 20 Bypass.
That plea remains in effect.
“I am out here and visibility is horrible!” Sheriff William Redman said in the Facebook post. “Stay off the bypass!”
The Facebook post reported that one St. Joseph County Police officer had to drive off the road to avoid being hit by a semi-truck but was OK.
“It is an all hands on deck situation as our team continues to respond to the bypass,” the department said in the Facebook post. “Visibility remains bad, roads are slick. Only minor injuries are being reported at this time.”
St. Joseph County Police and South Bend Police responded to multiple crashes Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, on the St. Joseph Valley Parkway in South Bend. Locally known as the U.S. 20 Bypass, the road had become “quite slick,” police said, because of the day’s snowfall and freezing temperatures.
By noon, St. Joseph County Police were in the process of responding to three separate crashes in the southbound lanes of the bypass between Indiana 2 and Mayflower Road. One of those crashes involved at least 10-15 cars.
Likewise, South Bend Police responded to multiple crashes and slide-offs on the bypass Tuesday morning, the department said in an email.
The snow and frigid temps have caused the roadway to become “quite slick,” South Bend Police said in an email late Tuesday morning.
