How much is it going to snow in Knoxville and East Tennessee this week?

It’s about to get cold in Knoxville and East Tennessee.

A cold front is sweeping across the United States, which is expected to bring winter-like temperatures to the region later this week. East Tennessee will see wind chills in the 20s and upper teens on Nov. 22, according to the National Weather Service.

The big question on everyone’s minds: Is it going to snow? How much fresh snow could East Tennessee see on Thursday and Friday?

Will it snow in Knoxville and East Tennessee?

There is a chance of snow for East Tennessee this week as of Wednesday, Nov. 20, according to the National Weather Service

  • Knoxville: Yes. There is a 40% chance of rain and snow showers before 9 p.m. on Nov. 21.

  • Morristown: Yes. There is a 30% chance of snow showers on the night of Nov. 21 and a “likely” chance of snow before 8 a.m. Nov. 22.

  • Tri-cities: Yes. Snow showers are “likely” on Thursday night and there is also a chance of snow on Friday morning.

  • Gatlinburg: Yes. There is a 40% chance of snow the night of Nov. 21 and a chance of snow the morning of Nov. 22.

  • Chattanooga: There is no chance of snow.

When is it going to snow?

Across East Tennessee, the highest chance of snow will happen on Thursday night, Nov. 21, and Friday morning, Nov. 22. A winter weather advisory will be in place for easternmost Tennessee communities on Thursday night.

How much snow will fall in East Tennessee?

From Nov. 21 through Nov. 23, the National Weather Service forecasts up to three inches of snow for Northeast Tennessee. High elevations might see measurable snow, according to the National Weather Service.

  • Knoxville: No measurable snow

  • Morristown: less than half an inch

  • Sunbright: less than half an inch

  • La Follette: 0.5 to 1 inch

  • Gatlinburg: 1 to 2 inches

  • Greeneville: 1 to 2 inches

  • Mountain City: 2 to 3 inches

Will this be the first snow of the season in Tennessee?

No. The Smokies saw the first snowfall of the season on Oct. 15. Parts of the Great Smoky Mountains saw up to three inches of snow on that day.
