How Pete Alonso views Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s $500 million deal

Several times Pete Alonso said he is focused on this season — not the offseason and not the kind of contract he eventually hopes to sign.

But on the day Vladimir Guerrero Jr. landed a 14-year, $500 million pact from the Blue Jays, the Mets first baseman acknowledged the megadeal is a positive development for first basemen everywhere.

“It’s huge for first basemen — 35 [million dollars], I think that breaks an AAV record,” Alonso said, correctly, of the highest average-annual value for a contract signed by a first baseman. “Obviously half a billion dollars is a huge, huge amount. … For him, this is a fantastic deal, and it’s great for the first base market I think.

“Fourteen years — I mean, he’s a stud. … And I think right now you can’t think about the Toronto Blue Jays without Vlad Jr.”
