Chesterfield Police investigate death of bicyclist on Route 1 New Year’s Eve night

CHESTER − Chesterfield Police say a bicyclist was killed early Tuesday night on Route 1 near its intersection with Happy Hill Road in the southern portion of the county.

The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

It happened shortly before 6:45 p.m. in the 16500 block of Route 1, according to a statement from Chesterfield Police. The cyclist, an adult male, was thrown from his bike after he was struck by a vehicle.

Police said the driver remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation. Both directions of Route 1 were closed to traffic while the scene was cleared.
