Jim Carrey Sells LA Home of 30 Years After $10M Price Drop Amid Claims He Needs The Money

Did a series of unfortunate events cause funnyman Jim Carrey to finally sell his LA home of 30 years by taking a drop of $10 million from his original asking price? The 10,954-square-foot house in Brentwood went into contract with an asking price of $19.75 million, down from $28.9 million a year ago.
Carrey had stated in 2022 that he was quitting acting after starring in the wildly successful “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” but his time off was short-lived. The actor stars in the third installment, which will be released on December 20th. When questioned about the retirement U-turn during the film’s promotion, Carrey hinted at a cash crunch:

“I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” Carrey quipped. “And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
The actor, 62, is reported to have a net worth of $180 million. He previously sold a Malibu home for $13.95 million in 2013 and also owns a home in Maui, which is believed to have been purchased in 2017. It is his primary residence. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Carrey also owns an apartment in New York.
Carrey previously told the New York Post of his recently sold LA home:
“For three decades, it’s been a sanctuary for me, but I don’t spend a lot of time there now and I want someone else to enjoy it like I have.” Carrey still stands to make a fortune by most people’s standards from selling his LA home, having purchased it way back in 1994 for $3.8 million.

Carrey’s career heyday was during the nineties and early oughts when he was the first actor to earn $20 million for a movie and earned at least $300 million from film salaries and bonuses. Box office hits from that era include The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, The Truman Show, Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty. Despite big up front checks, Carrey also made some savvy financial moves. At the height of his fame, he relinquished a big front-end paycheck for the movie “Yes Man” in exchange for being a part owner of the movie. It paid off as the film grossed $223 million worldwide, earning Carrey around $30 million.
