Large wildfire off US 501 in Myrtle Beach area closes several roads, fire officials say

Generate Key Takeaways

A large wildfire off U.S. 501 on Friday has closed several roads as Horry County Fire Rescue works to extinguish the blaze.

The fire agency reported on its social media account about the 7-acre fire. The wildfire is in the area of West Perry Road, Myrtle Ridge Drive and Middle Ridge Avenue.

Middle Ridge Avenue is closed between Myrtle Ridge Drive and West Perry Road, the post said.

At 7:05 p.m., structures are being protected and the wind is currently keeping the bulk of the fire in the contained area, Horry County Fire Rescue said.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission has two plows cutting fire lines protecting Middle Ridge Avenue. State fire crews also have a plane in the air, providing reconnaissance to ground crews.

Crews from City of Conway Fire Department, Myrtle Beach Fire Department and North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue have also joined in fighting the fire, saturating the north side of Middle Ridge Avenue with water between the wildfire and Highway 501, the post said.

This fire is producing significant smoke, visible from a great distance, and will continue to do so for an extended duration.

This fire is different than the Covington Drive wildfire in the Carolina Forest area. That fire, which covers 2,059 acres, remains 80% contained. However, fire crews have responded to several flareups this week.

A burn ban remains in effect in Horry County.

Fire crews responded to the West Perry Road fire at 4:45 p.m.

This is an active incident and fire officials are asking people to stay away from the area.
