RJ Luis leaving St. John’s to enter transfer portal, test NBA Draft waters
RJ Luis Jr. is moving on.
The St. John’s wing is taking the professional route and also entering the transfer portal, a source confirmed.
It has been known for a while that the 6-foot-7 junior would test the NBA draft waters.
That’s not a surprise.
Entering the portal came after a meeting with coach Rick Pitino, according to sources.
The feeling is that Luis is focused on playing professionally after being named the Big East Player of the Year and Big East Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
If he does opt to return to college, he could cash in on a big Name, Image & Likeness deal.
A Miami native, Luis isn’t on most mock drafts and one scout told The Post that he is likely a second-round pick if he stays in the draft.
Whatever happens, Luis was a major part of the best St. John’s team in 25 years. He took a major leap after an injury-prone first season in Queens, averaging a team-high 18.2 points along with 7.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
Luis struggled mightily in the NCAA Tournament second-round loss to Arkansas, shooting 3-of-17 field. Pitino benched him for the final 4:56 of the loss. Afterwards, Luis faulted himself for letting his teammates down.
“I should’ve been more of a leader,” he said. “That’s on me.”
