Long Island weather: Rainy, chilly weekend

It will be a chilly, rainy weekend on Long Island with showers expected to begin Saturday afternoon and continue in patches through Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
The high temperature on Saturday will be in the low 50s. The rain is expected to begin after 11 a.m. and thunderstorms are forecast for later Saturday night, when the temperature will remain around 50 degrees.
“We’re looking at about half-an-inch to three-quarters-of-an-inch of rainfall over the weekend with temperatures today on the cooler side for this time of the year, with highs only in the lower 50s, maybe some upper 40s out of the Twin Forks,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Joe Pollina said.
Sunday is forecast to be warmer, with a high temperature in the upper 50s, but rain will return after 2 p.m. and continue through the night.
“As far as rain is concerned, overnight Sunday night we’re looking at another round of rainfall,” Pollina said. “That looks like an even better chance for rainfall [than Saturday]. We’ve got a 95% to 100% chance around midnight on Monday through daybreak.”
Those showers will keep up until midmorning on Monday when the high temperature will only hit the upper 40s. Monday night will also be rainy as temperatures dip into the mid 30s.
The showers will stop on Tuesday morning and it will remain sunny for most of the week, but temperatures are not expected to break 50 degrees until Thursday.
“We slowly taper off through the day on Monday and dry conditions return everywhere on Tuesday,” Pollina said.
Rain is expected to return with warm temperatures in the upper 50s on Friday.
