Long Island weather: Warm, rainy weekend forecast

It will be a warm, rainy weekend on Long Island with high temperatures in the 50s and an increasing chance of showers through Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain and fog are expected to last until Monday morning. It’s expected to remain cloud yon Saturday with a high of 50 degrees, according to weather service meteorologist James Tomasini.

“Today we’re expected to be mostly dry — that’s after any morning fog or drizzle out there,” he said. “Highs today across Long Island will be in the low 50s. Chances for rain increase late this evening with a chance of some rain showers overnight.”

The chances of rain jump to 30% on Saturday night and remain steady during the day on Sunday, when temperatures are expected to increase to the high 50s.

There’s a 90% chance of rain on Sunday night and showers will continue on Monday, when temperatures will remain in the mid-to-high-50s.

“The chances of rain will increase, becoming likely by around 8 p.m. Sunday evening. At that time, we should expect moderate rain showers with locally heavy downpours possible,” Tomasini told Newsday.

Thunderstorms are not expected to reach Suffolk County on Sunday and Monday, according to Tomasini who said, “any thunder is expected to stay closer to the city — maybe we’ll get some thunderstorms that make it into Nassau County, but they shouldn’t make it too far east.”

The temperature will remain in the 50s throughout most of next week. Dryer weather is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, with the next chance of rain being on Thursday.

“We dry out Monday night and we’re dry through Wednesday night. Our next chance of any rain isn’t until Thursday afternoon,” said Tomasini, who said that rain would last into mid-Friday.
