Macy’s Is Closing Over 60 Stores—See if the One Near You Is GONE

It’s a known fact that department stores aren’t getting the amount of foot traffic as they once did, and many, like Lord & Taylor and Century 21, have announced bankruptcy or closed down altogether. The latest to take a hit? Macy’s. The chain, which originally announced it would be closing 150 stores by the end of 2026, has made good on its promise, shutting down 66 locations so far.
The stores that have already closed or will be closing vary widely, affecting 21 states. If you live in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Texas, or Virginia—your local Macy’s could be gone very soon. You can see the full store closure list here.
Back in January, Macy’s CEO and chairman Tony Spring commented on the situation in a statement, saying, “Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.”
To sum it up, while the company is shutting down many stores, it’ll continue to operate other outposts that drive revenue and help those stores become even more elevated in their fashion, home, and beauty offerings.
For those who live in New York City, the iconic Macy’s in Herald Square is probably the first that comes to mind when you think of the mega department store chain—the spot where the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade concludes every year. That location is safe (for now). A fun fact, too: Macy’s was actually founded by Rowland Hussey Macy in New York City in 1858, so here’s hoping it doesn’t completely disappear from the Big Apple.
In the meantime, Macy’s will continue to operate its other 350 stores and open up additional Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores across the country in order to further tap into the luxury sector.
