Man who barricaded himself in Fruita home arrested on several charges

FRUITA, Colo. (KREX) – The Fruita man who barricaded himself inside a home Tuesday morning was arrested on five outstanding warrants and new charges following the incident.

James Dupree, 42, is currently in Mesa County Detention Facility after the Fruita Police Department responded to a report of a verbal dispute around 6:35 a.m. in the 1400 block of South Gemini Circle.

After arriving at the scene, officers found the home occupied but they were unable to contact the occupants.

The dispatch center learned a female victim was asking for help and did not feel safe. She also said Dupree was allegedly not allowing her to leave the home, according to the Fruita Police Department.

Dupree continued to refuse to leave the residence leading to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and the Grand Junction Police Department SWAT teams being called in. He was later taken into custody around 11:12 a.m.

Dupree is charged with:

  • Intimidating a witness or victim, a Class 4 felony

  • False Imprisonment, a Class 5 felony

  • Third-degree assault, a Class 1 misdemeanor

  • Failure or refusal to leave premises/property upon request of a peace officer, a Class 2 misdemeanor

  • Domestic violence enhancer

A shelter-in-place notice was sent to around 732 contacts during the incident, law enforcement said.
