ALDI is planning a first in its 50-year history. The discount grocery chain plans to open 225 new locations in 2025, and many are in the South.
Almost half of the planned locations already exist under a different name. According to a company press release, about 100 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets in the Southeast will be converted into an Aldi this year. Aldi plans to convert 220 supermarkets in total by 2027.
ALDI has also divested around 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys locations, so not every one of those grocery stores will turn into an ALDI. The chains are quite different: Winn-Dixie is a full-service traditional supermarket, while ALDI has a no-frills approach and less selection. You’ll have to bag your own groceries (take your own bags if you don’t want to have to buy them) and bring a quarter to rent the shopping cart. ALDI’s customers benefit in turn from some of the lowest prices around.
“Converting the remaining locations to the ALDI format is critically important to our nationwide commitment to help shoppers fill their carts with quality groceries for less. As shoppers continue to feel sticker shock at the checkout, the value ALDI delivers can’t be beat,” says CEO Jason Hart.
The record-breaking expansion dwarfs ALDI’s growth last year, when it opened nearly 120 new stores. ALDI currently has about 2,400 locations, making it the third biggest grocery chain in the U.S.
