Missouri mom accused of starving 1-year-old for nearly 2 days before child died
A Missouri mother is behind bars for allegedly starving her 1-year-old to death after the toddler was found unresponsive and covered in blisters from a diaper rash during nearly two days of severe neglect, according to local reports.
Alyssa Wehmeyer, 21, was arrested on Tuesday and slapped with child abuse charges after authorities learned the cruel mom didn’t feed her child for at least 43 hours before the toddler was found dead, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Police launched an investigation after they deemed the child’s Feb. 28 death suspicious, KFVS reported.
The Cape Girardeau resident claimed she last fed the youngster around 5 p.m. on Feb. 26 and then put the child to bed more than 24 hours later, according to court documents obtained by McClatchy.
The neglectful mother allegedly left her child unattended in its crib for about 19 hours before finding the baby lifeless and not breathing with blue lips, court documents showed.
Investigators later found “severe blisters” on the victim from a diaper rash, the outlet reported.
Wehmeyer reportedly blamed her scathing carelessness on a “migraine.”
She told authorities that she took a nap after taking three Excedrin, which then prevented her from changing the toddler’s diaper or seeking medical care, according to court docs.
She is charged with abuse or neglect of a child, resulting in death, jail records show.
Wehmeyer is being held at Scott County Jail on $100,000 bond.
