MU doctor will receive American College of Physicians award
A Columbia internal medicine doctor recently was announced as the recipient of a prestigious recognition by the American College of Physicians.
David A. Fleming is expected to receive the Alfred Stengel Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to the ACP, the national organization of internal medicine physicians, during the ACP’s annual Convocation ceremony April 3 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. This is part of the ACP’s annual scientific conference April 3-5.

Fleming is professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Missouri and is a major figure in medical ethics, ACP said.
He’s served as president of the Missouri Society of Internal Medicine; as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Society of Internal Medicine; as governor, chair of the Board of Governors, member of the Board of Regents, and president of the American College of Physicians. Most recently, he served as member and chair of the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs of the American Medical Association.
Fleming founder and inaugural director of the Center for Health Ethics at MU. He was a contributor to the ACP’s ethics manual. He has served on MU faculty since 1980. As director of the MU Center for Health Ethics directs the clinical ethics consult service and chairs the clinical ethics committee at MU Health Care. He also has developed curriculum in medical ethics and professionalism.
