Myrtle Beach, SC area under tornado watch with severe thunderstorms coming. What to expect

The Myrtle Beach area faces a tornado watch as severe thunderstorms move into the area.

The tornado watch is under effect until 2 p.m. for the Grand Strand, said Doug Hoehler, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. A watch means tornadoes are possible but not imminent.

There may also be wind gusts up to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The wind may make it difficult to travel.

Severe thunderstorms are expected in the Myrtle Beach area starting at noon and lasting until 5 p.m., Hoehler said. The storms may stick around after 5 p.m., but at a lesser intensity.

“Preparation really is the first step in this sort of stuff,” Hoehler said. “Know well ahead of time what you’re going to do.”
