Navy vet, 73, opened fire at laundromat in his old hometown, claiming city was ‘controlling his mind’: video

The 73-year-old man who shot three people inside an Indiana laundromat before turning the gun on himself believed his old hometown was “controlling his mind,” harrowing new video shows.

The newly released footage from the Lafayette Police Department shows the moment Louis McGlothlin, of Lincoln, Nebraska, returned to his childhood hometown and entered the Lafayette Laundry on the night of Dec. 5, where he immediately opened fire and killed one man and injured two others.

McGlothin, a US Navy veteran, then stepped outside the laundromat, and, after clearing his jammed weapon, shot himself in the head, dying two days later at a local hospital.

The shooting left the city shaking in its wake, with police now offering clues behind the senseless violence after uncovering McGlothin’s private videos, where he shared strange conspiracy theories about his childhood home.

“In these recordings, he spoke about his belief that individuals in Indiana, specifically in Lafayette, were controlling his mind,” police said.

“The content of these recordings strongly suggests that (McGlothlin) was suffering from undiagnosed and severe mental health issues.”

Clips of the home videos show McGlothin talking about the “cancer that’s been allowed to develop within the city of Lafayette.”

“You have to bust these people up,” McGlothlin said in one of the clips.

“They want your energy.”

Police also found a photograph of a white piece of paper sitting on a CD that suggested McGlothin had been planning the attack for years.

“The reason I have a CD is because I was going to do this in the year 2000. I have a pistol and could not control it. I sold the pistol to Nebraska Guns. Receipt is in file cabinet. After what happened to Michelle,” the note read.

The police department said McGlothin drove from Nebraska to Indiana on the day of the shooting, with no known connections found between any of the victims or the location of the shooting.

The victims have been identified as Keith Ford, 35, who was killed in the shooting, while Renee Martin, 32, and Salvador Antonio De La Cruz Reyes, 30, are currently hospitalized. Lafayette Indiana Police Department

“It is believed that he targeted the laundromat simply because it was an open business in an area he recognized,” police said.

Keith Ford, 35, was killed in the shooting, with Renee Martin, 32, and Salvador Antonio De La Cruz Reyes, 30, both hospitalized.

Lafayette police Sgt. Shawn Verma said his office decided to publish the video on Thursday in order to be transparent with the community due to high public interest in the shooting.
