Skeleton is all that remains of once-elegant hotel in Wichita Falls
Looking like the remains of some prehistoric river beast, the former Sheraton Hotel by the Wichita River was not much more than a skeleton Wednesday.
A once-grand hotel is little more than a see-though skeleton near the banks of the Wichita River on Wednesday. The city of Wichita Falls hired a demolition crew to tear down the vacant and delapidating structure.
A Fort Worth demolition crew has been bringing down the once luxurious hotel for about a week. The city is paying about $381,000 to tear down the structure after reaching a demolition agreement with the out-of-state owner.
The remains of the once-elegant Sheraton Hotel near the Wichita River stands as an eerie skeleton Wednesday. The city of Wichita Falls hired a Fort Worth company to tear down the vacant building.
The hotel was built in 1985 with $10 million in city and county bonds. It changed ownership several times over the years, flooded when the nearby Wichita River overflowed and eventually closed, becoming a dilapidated eyesore.
Once a showplace, the old hotel near the Wichita River on Central Expressway, as seen in this Times Record News undated file photo, is undergoing demolition.
The city acquired adjacent land near the river in 2024, and officials have said the property beneath the doomed structure is developable.
