4.8 magnitude earthquake shakes New Mexico and Texas

An earthquake that occurred near Ackerly, Texas, was felt in Las Cruces and across the Borderland Friday, Feb. 28, at about 1:33 p.m. MT, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The 4.8-magnitude earthquake in the Permian was followed by a series of aftershocks over the next hour, reported the USGS. The first was a 2.1-magnitude tremor three minutes after the initial quake.

The earthquake was felt as far west as Las Cruces and across West Texas, according to social media.

There were no reports of power outages or damage in Las Cruces after the earthquake as of Friday afternoon.

The quake was the third recorded in the region in February. A magnitude 5 quake on Feb. 14 and a 4.7 quake on Feb. 18 were also recorded by the USGS. The West Texas and southeastern New Mexico region where the quakes were centered is the nation’s largest crude oil and natural gas producer.
