NY man says he was blackout drunk when he beat his drinking buddy to death on sidewalk
A Westchester County man charged with brutally beating his drinking buddy to death on a suburban sidewalk said he was so drunk at the time that he can’t recall the fatal assault.
Jare Diaz, 26, said Tuesday that he has no memory of the Nov. 26, 2022 attack on Otoniel Guzman Desdicho on a White Plains sidewalk after a bout of heavy boozing, lohud.com reported.
Diaz said he has repeatedly watched surveillance video footage of heartless attack — to no avail.
“Since the first day I was in jail until now I’ve tried to remember but I’ve been unable,” he told his lawyer, Angelo MacDonald, after testifying in a White Plains courtroom.
Diaz said he was distraught on the night of the attack after his wife left him and took their young son over his heavy drinking and marijuana use — and decided to go on a bender with Desdicho, the outlet said.
He said the pair drank beer and from two large bottles of Bacardi rum before their scuffle.
Two cameras captured the confrontation, including from an East Post Road laundromat, which showed the two getting in to a drunken shoving match before Diaz allegedly attacked his friend.
He is accused of kicking and punching Desdicho 34 times, and at one point dragged him along the ground, leaving the victim mortally injured, lohud said.
He was placed on life support at the Westchester County Medical Center but died three days later.
Diaz has been held at the Westchester County Jail without bail since Nov. 28, 2022, on murder, manslaughter and robbery charges, records show.
The Westchester County DA’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
