Cold Spring Harbor house for sale has 2,000-square-foot sports facility

A Cold Spring Harbor home with its own 2,000-square-foot sports facility is on the market for nearly $3.5 million.

The four-bed, three-bath ranch on East Woods Drive and detached gym sit on a 2.33-acre parcel. Taxes on the property, which falls within the Cold Spring Harbor Central School District, total $41,404.

With custom-stained cedar shingles and mahogany front and garage doors, the house is in “a darker style,” said listing agent Scott Van Son, of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Laffey International Realty.

“It’s a nice change from most of the homes in the area,” said Van Son, noting that many homes in the area are in the Colonial style. “Architecturally it’s beautiful, the curb appeal is really nice.”

Laurel Moynihan and her husband, Jim, bought the house over 21 years ago, when they had a 2-year-old son and another on the way, she said. When their sons were in first and third grades, Laurel and Jim renovated the house: expanded the kitchen, added a fourth bedroom and a mud room.

The expanded kitchen includes two islands, a double oven, two sinks, two dishwashers and a breakfast nook lit by a curved stretch of windows.

Once renovations on the main house were finished, Jim suggested building a gym. With sport court flooring, the space is equipped for various activities, including basketball and lacrosse.

“We have this gorgeous, gourmet kitchen, it’s got everything I could ever need in it,” Laurel said. “But the best thing we ever did in this house was build that gym.”

Her sons would go on to play college lacrosse at Wesleyan and Yale, she said.

“The fact that they could play and train regardless of whether it’s nighttime, or raining, or whatever, was so huge,” she said.

The property also includes an in-ground gunite pool.

The homeowners have access to Eagle Dock Beach and have the option to join the corresponding beach association for $350 a year, Van Son said.
