An attendee of the Phoenix Open golf tournament jumped into a canal adjoining the course and had to be rescued. Two Scottsdale police officers were injured saving him.
The man, whose name was not released by Scottsdale police, was arrested on suspicion of trespass, aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Information on his custody status was not immediately available on Thursday.
The man jumped into the canal on Tuesday at around 6:15 p.m., police said. That was the day of practice rounds for the weekend tournament. Though by that time, it was sunset, and the day had concluded.
Five officers helped save the man, police said. Two sustained minor unspecified injuries, with one being taken to the hospital, police said.
The man was also taken to the hospital for evaluation, police said.
The 90th edition of the WM Phoenix Open begins Thursday at TPC Scottsdale. Known as The People’s Open, the event draws annual headlines for its raucous crowds and party atmosphere.
