Another Dutton Is Getting Their Own ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff – Here’s What We Know So Far
Taylor Sheridan is going to keep the Dutton family on our screens one way or another.
Yellowstone Season 5 was intended to mark the end of the hit Paramount Network series. But a new report reveals there’s plenty of drama coming down the pipeline for the Duttons: Luke Grimes‘ Kayce Dutton will be getting his own chance to shine in a new spinoff series coming to CBS.
Deadline reports the network is in “early discussions” to develop a procedural series based on Kayce’s past as a Navy SEAL. The outlet notes SEAL Team showrunner Spencer Hudnut is leading the new show and has been working on the idea for over a year, while getting Sheridan’s approval and Grimes’ commitment to the series.
The last time Yellowstone fans saw Kayce was in the series finale, which showed the youngest Dutton sibling selling the ranch to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Indian Reservation for $1.25 an acre, on the condition that the land never be developed and that he and his family be allowed to to live on a small part of the land.
Deadline notes the show is still in early development.
Grimes has expressed that he would be interested in reprising the role again, but it would be difficult to continue Kayce’s story after where it left off in Season 5.
“There’s always talks of spinoffs. I’d do it [but] I just don’t understand how it would work once the story ends,” he told Esquire. “Kayce wants to cowboy and be happy with his family. He doesn’t want to kill people anymore. He doesn’t want the weight of a huge megaranch that isn’t sustainable in today’s times. He wants his little slice of heaven. It’s that simple.”
This would be Sheridan’s latest spinoff series from the Yellowstone universe. But, if the reports are true, this will be the first to stray from the neo-Western genre Sheridan has become known for.
Yellowstone prequel series 1883 and 1923 are still airing on Paramount+, and a spinoff series following Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) is also reportedly in the works.
Sheridan is also developing Yellowstone‘s first contemporary spinoff The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Fox.
