Sacramento starts implementing new ‘daylighting law’ that impacts street parking
(FOX40.COM) — Now that California’s new “daylighting law” took effect at the start of the year, the city of Sacramento has begun working to implement it.
The law prohibits parking close to a crosswalk to make it safer for pedestrians crossing the street.
The prohibition applies to parking near the first crosswalk a driver encounters as they approach an intersection.
That means that on a two-directional roadway, a driver cannot park close to the crosswalk on the right-hand side where the intersection is. On a one-way street, that prohibition would apply to both sides of the street.

A spokesperson with the City of Sacramento said that staff are working in several ways to implement the law, including at newly constructed intersections and existing ones.
New intersections will have the appropriate parking limits next to crosswalks, and staff are working on putting the limits in higher pedestrian areas such as downtown.
Staff has also begun to identify the 20-foot “no parking” zones with red curb paint or signs, although citations are still not being issued, since that would involve City Council approval, the spokesperson told FOX40.com.
Until then, warnings are being issued.
The spokesperson said that staff have not yet identified how many parking spaces would be affected throughout the city, and emphasized that the state law applies to every intersection in California.
