Second case of bird flu confirmed in Connecticut

Highly pathogenic avian influenza, or H5N1, has been confirmed in a backyard flock of birds in New Haven County, marking the second time the disease has been found in the state this month, according to officials.

State officials said they have quarantined the affected area, and birds on the property have been euthanized to prevent the spread of the disease, according to the Connecticut Department of Agriculture. Preliminary testing was conducted by the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory and further testing with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory is still pending.

Bird flu has now been confirmed in two backyard flocks, according to the Connecticut Department of Agriculture. A backyard flock in New London County was identified with the virus and consisted of chickens, ducks, and peacocks that were family pets, not commercial poultry. The flock had close contact with wild birds in a nearby pond, officials said. The announcement on Jan. 17, was the state’s first positive confirmation of the virus.

“We continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we respond to reports of sick domestic birds to protect both animal and human health,” said Agriculture Commissioner Bryan Hurlburt in a statement. “It’s important that all flock owners take the proper steps to protect their birds, remain vigilant in monitoring their flock for sudden changes, and report suspected cases promptly.”

Despite the virus now being in the state, human risk remains low, according to officials.
