Everyone knows Amarillo is a windy city. But just how windy? A new study says it’s the breeziest city in the nation.
That might not come as a surprise, as recent high winds brought fire weather to the area and damaged buildings.
Here’s what to know about where Amarillo falls among the windiest cities in the United States.
The Tascosa Drive-In shows extensive damage Monday in Amarillo after the weekend’s strong winds and severe weather passed through the area. The marquee towers β built on wooden frames decades ago β have underlying structural issues, and much of the wood is rotting or splintered, requiring more extensive repairs than anticipated.

According to a ranking of the 10 windiest cities in the U.S. with a population of 100,000 or more by Redfin, a real-estate brokerage company, Amarillo lands at number one.
Redfin ranked the cities based on the annual average wind speed, and in Amarillo, that is 12.9 miles per hour.
Officially, the record highest wind speed in Amarillo is 84 miles per hour in 1949, according to Redfin.
