While no communication platform is fully secure, the systems below are intended to help protect your privacy. Please use these channels to share information that you believe to be factual, newsworthy, and in the public interest, and on which you think we should consider reporting. Before contacting The New Yorker, you should review the terms of service of any application you use, consider whether it retains metadata, and understand that it may contain unknown security bugs.
We regret that we are not able to respond to every tip; if we contact you, we will make reasonable efforts to do so via the channel you have chosen. If you would like to reach a specific writer or editor before sharing your tip, you may note that in your first message. Signal
Signal is a free messaging app with end-to-end encryption. It offers the ability to send messages that can be set to disappear from the sender’s phone, the recipient’s phone, and the cloud after the message has been opened. Signal retains a limited amount of senders’ and receivers’ metadata: their phone numbers, the date and time they registered for service, and the most recent date of app activity. The number below is for messages only. Please do not call it.

Encrypted e-mails can be sent to The New Yorker via Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) software, which safeguards the body of the message and, separately, in some programs, attachments. One program that protects both body text and (as a separate step) attachments is the browser extension Mailvelope. Metadata such as the sender, recipient, subject, and time stamp will be accessible to your e-mail provider. Mailvelope is only as secure as your browser, so it is highly recommended that you keep your browser up to date.

Postal Mail
Sending us postal mail is a generally secure way to confidentially share documents, physical media, or a USB drive. To keep the material as secure as possible, please use a public mailbox rather than the post office.
