Table Rock Fire prompts evacuations in Transylvania Co.; New fire in Swain Co. at 500 acres

Evacuation orders were issued overnight for areas of Transylvania County and Swain County as fires in South Carolina are expected to rapidly grow on March 26 and as a new fire began in Swain County.

The Bryson City Police Department in Swain County issued evacuation orders for the Alarka Community, including Long Creek Lane, Unahala Creek Road and Alarka Highlands Drive. An unnamed fire was reported by the N.C. Forest Service on March 26 at 8:24 a.m. as at 500 acres near the Unahala and Alarka communities.

The Alarka Community Center is acting as a shelter for those evacuated in Swain County.

Upstate SC fire threatens NC counties

Connestee Fire Rescue in Transylvania County issued evacuation orders for the Big Hill Community, Dolly Masters Road, Glady Fork Road, Lake Honda and the Happy Acres Communities, the department announced on social media. Fire crews are going door to door to notify residents.

Transylvania County Emergency Management has opened a shelter at the Transylvania Recreation Department located 1078 Ecusta Road in Brevard.

The Table Rock Fire in Upstate South Carolina, in Greenville and Pickens counties, grew rapidly to 2,293 acres on March 25 and is currently at 0% containment, the South Carolina Forestry Commission announced on social media. Due to high possibility of the fire spreading across state lines to North Carolina on March 26, evacuation orders were issued in Transylvania County, Connestee Fire Rescue said in an evening update.

“NCFS crews are in the area trying to put fire lines in now with dozers and will continue working through the night,” the update continued.

North Carolina is currently under a statewide burn ban.
