Texas Man Flees the Scene of 100 MPH Car Crash, Abandoning his Wife and 4 Children Now in Critical Condition: Police

Police in Texas are searching for a man who fled the scene of a high-speed car crash — leaving his critically injured family behind, Houston police tell PEOPLE.

When first responders arrived at the scene Tuesday evening on Yale Street in north Houston, they found the man’s wife and three toddler children inside the car, while an 8-year-old girl had been ejected from the vehicle, said the spokesperson.

All five were in desperate need of medical attention, said the spokesperson, and are currently hospitalized, with three in critical condition and two in serious condition.

The family was in a Ford Expedition that investigators believe was barreling down the road at 100 mph before the crash, said the spokesperson.

Another driver then made a turn, trying to swerve to avoid the fast-moving Expedition.

Police say it was too late by then and the cars crashed, sending the Expedition flying through the air before flipping over and landing in a bayou.

The driver then fled, with another car arriving on the scene to pick him up, said the spokesperson.

Capt. Ryan Watson of the HPD said that investigators still do not know why the man chose to flee the scene. Officers are following all leads to try and locate the man.
