Shortly after, officers located Hernandez in a vehicle in the 1000 block of North Avenue Q Drive with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, Moreno, was also shot. He was taken to University Medical Center via ambulance with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Hernandezβs death led to the investigation being turned over to the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit.
Through the initial course of the investigation, it appears, there was a verbal altercation inside a business in the 1200 block of Jarvis Street, involving the victims and other individuals, which spilled outside of the business and led to multiple physical altercations.
Initial information indicates at some point during the physical altercations happening outside, Hernandez and Moreno got in an SUV and drove through the parking lot. It appears when the vehicle stopped, a suspect or suspects, began shooting, striking both men inside the vehicle.
At that point, Moreno drove a short distance before stopping in front of a separate business in the 1000 block of North Avenue Q Drive, where he was met by patrol officers.
Other information about the shooting, including how Martinez and the youth were linked to the violence, was not immediately clear as the investigation is ongoing.
However, court records indicate that a Lubbock police sergeant identified Martinez as a suspect in the shooting early on in the investigation.
Investigators then linked Martinez to a house in the 800 block of East Fordham Street.
Three days after the shooting, police and investigators with the Texas Department of Public Safety watched the house and arrested Martinez after he was seen leaving through the front door.
A search of the residence yielded a firearm investigators believed was used in the shooting, a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana and a plastic baggy containing a white crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine.
Martinez was booked Feb. 18 into the Lubbock County Detention Center on felony and misdemeanor drug charges and was released on bail a few days later.
