‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 outfits: Costume designer breaks down the best looks
The guests at the White Lotus sure arenât shrinking violets â and neither are their outfits.
With Season 3 of the HBO hit finally here, a new cast of characters is checking into the titular hotel and unpacking their extensive luxury wardrobes, curated by head costume designer Alex Bovaird.
âWe have a little bit of a rule âŚ. there are no jeans [and] not a lot of black,â the fashion pro, whoâs worked on all three seasons, tells Page Six Style. â[We] donât really repeat clothes.â
One thing the show does repeat, however? A formula for instantly viral moments â in part thanks to A-list stars like Parker Posey, who Bovaird says was the âmost collaborativeâ on her characterâs looks.
âShe brought some things that were her motherâs or her grandmotherâs, like a watch and a ring; she has such a great sense of style,â the costume expert tells us, adding that Posey was particularly inspired by Tuckernuckâs âbeachy, preppyâ attire, too.
After all, while this seasonâs based in Thailand, Bovaird also sourced pieces everywhere from local shops to âold ramshackle seaside towns in the UKâ â resulting in a âhuge kind of [clothing] warehouse that we shipped âŚ. all over,â she says.
But if youâre inspired by the showâs luxe aesthetic, you wonât need a warehouse worth of options to re-create it. (Just ask Bovaird, who recently teamed up with H&M on a âWhite Lotusâ-inspired collection.)
âWe all aspire to have these ⌠adventures that lie before us and unknown mysteries,â she says of the dramedyâs sartorial allure. âI think thereâs a special alchemy.â
Read on for her top tips for bottling that âWhite Lotusâ fashion magic, and to shop pieces inspired by the show.
Go with the flow
The âWhite Lotusâ is hot in more ways than one; âThe heat was always against us, but I feel like the actors kind of got used to it,â Bovaird says of shooting on location in Thailand. âWe were always fighting the sweat.â
The antidote? âFlowy everything,â she says, noting that they used Australian label Casa Raki âa lotâ on the show.

Donât be afraid to go strapless
Stay cool in more ways than one with strapless styles, which Bovaird recommends for channeling the women of the Emmy-winning show.
âI always like the girly duos,â she says of her favorite characters to dress. âI think you can maybe be a little bit more experimental with the young girls because thatâs their character; theyâre more playful.â

Top it off with a straw hat
Whether youâre booking a tropical vacation or simply channeling âWhite Lotusâ vibes in the urban jungle , Bovaird recommends investing in a great straw hat. And while she tells us local wildlife didnât steal any accessories from the set â âLizard wranglers [were] there when we were workingâ â she couldnât say the same for all the cast.
âThe actors would try and steal the hats,â she laughs. âWeâd go, âWhereâs that hat?â Then weâd see someone wearing it.â

Sport strappy sandals
âI like a strap sandal with a buckle around the ankle,â says Bovaird. âI like putting those on the cast, too, especially if theyâve got long days or theyâre walking a lot.â
Shop the look:
Birkenstock Cannes Exquisite Buckled Sandals
K.Jacques Delta Sandals
Birkenstock Milano Big Buckle Sandals
Lead the pack
While the characters of âThe White Lotusâ certainly donât pack light, Bovaird recommends sourcing a stylish yet spacious day bag for your next big adventure.
But packability doesnât completely rule her costume decisions; â[Iâm] definitely taking some artistic license with what could actually pack down,â she says, admitting she âwent a little crazy this seasonâ with the number of looks for each female character.

Go big or go home
âIâve been calling it emotional dressing,â says Bovaird. People on âThe White Lotusâ wear what they feel. They want the best time and so theyâre bringing the best clothes ⌠Itâs bold, itâs free, itâs taking risks â and no rules, except go big.â
