Towanda man sentenced for theft and assault of an inmate

TOWANDA, Pa. (WETM) – A Towanda man has been sentenced to serve time in prison after he assaulted an inmate in a correctional facility after being committed to the facility on charges of theft and trespassing, as stated in a release from the Bradford County District Attorney’s Office.

Judah N. Porter, 19, was sentenced to a minimum of 44 months to a maximum of 10 years in state prison for the crimes of aggravated assault (first degree felony), burglary (second degree felony) and criminal trespass (second degree felony).

The DA states that Porter was charged with the burglary and criminal trespass offenses by Towanda Borough Police after he broke into a local smoke shop business two separate times in June of 2024 in an attempt to steal a variety of smoking products. At this time, Porter was placed in the Bradford County Correctional Facility while he awaited trial on the charges.

The DA further states that while Porter was in the correctional facility, he was charged with the aggravated assault crime after he approached another inmate in the recreational area and kicked them in the head while they were doing push-ups. This resulted in the inmate losing consciousness. This charge was filed following an investigation by Pennsylvania State Police in October of 2024.

The DA noted that Porter could have avoided a state prison sentence had he not committed the assault crime in the correctional facility on top of the two separate felony cases he was already facing.
