Samuel L. Jackson says ‘it’s not’ an honor to receive Oscar nomination:’It’s an honor to win’
Samuel L. Jackson is looking at the Academy Awards with a fresh perspective.
Jackson, 75, did not mince words when sharing his thoughts about the coveted gong, saying Oscar nominations donât mean much to him.
âWeâve been in the business long enough to know that when folks go, âItâs just an honor to be nominated.â No, it ainât,â Jackson told the Associated Press in a joint interview with his âThe Piano Lessonâ co-star Michael Potts.
âItâs an honor to win,â the âPulp Fictionâ actor said, adding that most people ultimately forget Oscar-nominated performances.
âYou get nominated and folks go, âYeah I remember that.â Or most people forget,â he quipped.
The âUnbreakableâ actor was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category at the 1995 Oscars for his role as Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantinoâs âPulp Fiction.â
He ultimately lost out to Martin Landau for his role as Ed Wood in the 1994 film of the same name.
Jackson believed that he wouldâve won an Oscar for his role in Joel Schumacherâs âA Time To Killâ if his memorable scenes hadnât been cut from the final version.
âThe things they took out kept me from getting an Oscar,â Jackson told old Vulture in 2023. âReally, motherfâkers? You just took that sât from me?â
âMy first day working on that film, I did a speech in a room with an actor and the whole fâking set was in tears when I finished. I was like, âOkay. Iâm on the right page.â That shit is not in the movie! And I know why itâs not. Because it wasnât my movie, and they werenât trying to make me a star.â
After years of being without the coveted award, Jackson was finally given the Honorary Academy Award in 2021, and was recognized as a âcultural iconâ by the Academy.
âGenerally itâs a contest you didnât volunteer to be in,â he said of award ceremonies. âI didnât go in there so I could flex. âLet me do my scene, so you can remember who I was.ââ
âThey nominate you and people go, âWhat is that movie youâre nominated for? Whatâs the name of that thing?â And after itâs over and people have a hard time remembering who even won,â the âSnakes on a Planeâ actor added.
The âStar Warsâ actor also told Vulture that his 2021 Oscar âdidnât feel honoraryâ and instead it âjust felt like I was getting an Oscar.â
âI earned it. I worked for it,â he told the outlet. âI can possibly name four other instances where I could have won or should have won or should have been nominated, but Iâm fine with it. Itâs mine. I got it. My nameâs on it.â
