Two suspects arrested after New Mexico mass shooting kills 3 and injures 15

A 17-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were arrested in connection with a shooting that killed three people and injured 15 at an unsanctioned car show in a New Mexico park Friday night.

The Las Cruces Police Department arrested the duo Saturday evening, and identified the 20-year-old as Tomas Rivas, but did not identify the minor, according to a news release. Both were charged with three open counts of murder and additional charges are pending.

“Rivas will be booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he will initially be held without bond,” police said. “The juvenile will be remanded to the juvenile detention facility.”

The investigation into the Friday night shooting remains ongoing, police said, adding that they’re actively chasing multiple leads.

Police also identified the three victims who were killed in the shooting as 16-year-old Andrew Madrid, 18-year-old Jason Gomez and 19-year-old Dominick Estrada. Madrid and Gomez died on the scene, while Estrada died after he was taken to a medical center.

The 15 victims who were injured — nine male and six female — range in age from 16 to 36, police said, adding that they will not identify them publicly in order to protect their privacy.

The shooting involving multiple firearms happened around 10 p.m. Friday at Young Park when an altercation between two groups at the car show escalated into gunfire, Police Chief Jeremy Story said. Many were injured including bystanders who may have been struck by crossfire.

It is not clear what started the altercation between the groups, but Story said it was a wild night before gunfire broke out in the parking lot area of the park.

“There was already craziness going on before the shooting, with people sticking guns out the window and driving and doing doughnuts,” he said in an interview with NBC News on Friday.

Young Park and nearby roads remained closed Saturday night as police continued gathering evidence from the area, police said.
